What We Believe

The beliefs of Eau Claire Baptist Church are based upon the 1963 version of the Baptist Faith and Message.

Below are excerpts from this text.

The Scriptures

The Holy Bible was written by divinely inspired people and is the record of God's revelation of Himself to humankind. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter.

God

There is one and only one living and true God. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. The eternal God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

God the Father

God as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of His grace. He is all powerful, all loving, and all wise.

God the Son

Christ is the eternal Son of God. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He identified Himself completely with humankind yet without sin. In His death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of people from sin and was raised from the dead, ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive Mission.

God the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. He enables people to understand truth. He convicts of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption.

Salvation

Salvation involves the redemption of the whole person, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer.

The Church

A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is a local body of baptized believers who are associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel. This church is an autonomous body, operating through democratic processes under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Baptism

Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus.

The Lord's Supper

The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of Christ and anticipate His second coming.

Baptist Principles on Freedom

The Centrality of the Scripture or Bible Freedom focuses on the Lordship of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Scriptures and is the Baptist understanding of religious authority. The criterion by which the Bible is interpreted is Jesus Christ.

Soul Competency or Soul Freedom focuses on the primacy of the individual and reflects the Baptist approach to salvation, with implications of other areas as well. Empowered by HOLY SPIRIT, every believer is competent to study and understand God's Word.

Autonomy of the Local Church or Church Freedom highlights the prominence of the believing community and the Baptist way of being and doing church. Each Church family has the autonomy to cooperate with any other Church, denomination or organization to do Kingdom work.

Religious freedom is the Baptist approach to religious liberty and focuses on the relationship of religion to the state. The state does not control religion and religion does not control the state.
